Gold Double Eagle Coins have a denomination of a whopping twenty dollars. They were authorized in 1849. Different versions included one called the Liberty Head and one called the Saint Gaudens Double Eagle. The Liberty Head was struck between 1849 to 1907. 1849, was also the first year of the Gold Rush. That was when gold was found in California by James Marshall. The first pattern made is now at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC. The second one made in proof was given to the Treasury Secretary, William Meredith. Production ended when the official price of gold was changed. In 1850, it would have been worth a little more than five hundred and twenty one dollars today. There were three minor varieties of this type.

The Saint Gaudens Double Eagle was struck between 1907 and 1933. Like the Gold Double Eagle, it is also 10% copper and 90% gold. The designer was a sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens. He was considered one of the best sculptors at at he time. His piece is considered to be a work of art. They can fetch between ten thousand and half a million dollars today, depending on whether they were circulated, and their condition. There are three minor versions of this type of coin.
