20 Dollar Gold Coin

In the early 20th century, Augustus Saint-Guadens was elected in redesign the US coinage.  He was a top sculptor and the work that he did in designing the high-relief 20 Dollar Gold Coin, was considered a work of art.  The 20 Dollar Gold Coin came to be known as the Saint-Gaudens double eagle.

The high-relief Saint-Gaudens double eagle required eleven strikes to create it and did not stack up right.  The mint insisted upon a low-relief version.  On 12,367 of the high-relief coins were created in 1907.  The initial design of the 20 Dollar Gold Coin featured the date in Roman numerals.  This was later changed to the Arabic numbers that people were familiar with.  Congress voted in 1908, to add the "In God we trust" motto, after it was omitted by President Roosevelt.  The President did not feel that it was correct to put the motto on money.

Once New Mexico and Arizona gained statehood in 1912, the 20 Dollar Gold Coin changed again.  The number of stars along the rim, which represented the number of states was changed from 46 to 48.  These coins were minted through 1933.

The design of the 20 Dollar Gold Coin was used for the American Eagle gold bullion coins of 1986.  These coins also used the Roman numerals.  These were minted from 1986-1991 and along with the 1907 double eagles, were the only time that Roman numerals were used on a American coin.

In 2009, the mint issued the ultra high relief double eagles, the way that Saint-Gaudens has once envisioned them. Because of the details contained within the coins they ended up being smaller than other double eagles.

The 20 Dollar Gold Coin was made of 90% gold and 10% copper alloy.  They were named the 20 Dollar Gold Coin because at .9675 troy ounce, that was their approximate value.  The price of gold at that time was $20.67 per ounce.  The first $20 Dollar Gold Coin was minted in 1849.  Over the years the coins values have risen significantly.  They have never though been more valuable then they are today with gold being at its historic high.
